Integrity

The topic Integrity has been mulling over my mind for some weeks now.  Wikipedia defines it as ‘a concept has to do with consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcomes.’  The definition goes on to state ‘Some people see integrity as the quality of having a sense of honesty and truthfulness in regard to the motivations for one’s actions.’

What started me thinking about integrity?  A number of events contributed to it: dishonesty in Church, Banking and mixed messages from our political leaders.  However, a conversation with a business person recently brought it home to me as this person stated that they struggled to communicate with others in business around them.  When this person realised that their struggle was as a result of how we communicate with each other they realised that when they concentrate on their own personal business values and ideals then there was no struggle to communicate.  The difficulties arose when they had to communicate in an arena where their values and beliefs collided with those around them.  Once they saw the sense of ‘honesty and truthfulness’ in relation to themselves then the struggle diminished.

So as we work towards our own personal integrity and developing integrity in our children and those around is, where do we begin?  Branden in the Six Pillars of Self Esteem describes Integrity as : ‘living with congruence between what we know, what we profess, and what we do; telling the truth, honouring our commitments, exemplifying in action the values we profess to admire.’

Do we live well with what we know and profess about ourselves?  Do we act as we believe we should act? Do we ‘walk the walk’?

If we had the strength to have integrity in our lives and institutions what would our society look like? What would we see, hear and sense every day?  What could we do to make us strong?  What could we do differently beginning now?

Transactional Analysis 101

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a theory of human development, personality, and communication. It has concepts that can be learned and applied as tools for personal and professional growth and change. The underlying philosophy is one of mutual self-respect and caring and a belief in peoples’ ability to be responsible think for themselves and make their own decisions.
TA theories and models are easy to understand and use, and can be related to:
• Personal development
• Working in teams and groups
• Attitudes to self and others, building self esteem
• Personal styles, assertiveness, parenting, discipline
• Positive communication in social and professional spheres
• Learning and transformation
The 101 Course is the officially recognised Introductory Course in TA and runs over 2 days (12 hours). It covers an internationally agreed syllabus including the full range of TA concepts and shows how these can be applied in social, family, educational and organisational settings. Participants in the 101 Course receive a 101 Verification Certificate and then qualify to apply for regular membership of the International Transactional Analysis Associations.
Comments from participant:
“In the TA 101 with Karen I gained a very good overview of what TA is. Karen introduced valuable tools and we could immediately experience how they bring subconscious processes within ourselves and in our interaction with others to consciousness. I see this as the basis for living an authentic life of responsible action instead of reflexive reaction.”

What is the question we should ask of ourselves?

This is being written with a few principles in mind. Firstly we are all responsible for our own actions and secondly we are all unique beings with potential to develop and progress in areas that allow us to offer the rest of the world our own ‘uniqueness’.

So what will we do with this belief? We are in challenging times economically, environmentally and spiritually and it appears that we have few sources to turn to for support or direction at this time. Do we look to our political leaders, churches, leading business institutions for the answers we need right now? Einstein stated that the problems that exist in the world cannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them. So if we need new thinking where will this come from? It is my belief that the primary source of direction needs to come from within ourselves. In our hearts and in our ‘instinct’ we will often find the answer we need. However, in dealing with change we need to check that we are asking the right question. What is the right question to ask ourselves now? Is it how to get back to where we were or is it something else? Could it be that we need to ask the question: “Where do we want to be in the future that will different from both now and the past?” There is no doubt that the future will be different, how can we create an excitement and opportunity in being part of this change?

How to become ‘resolute’ in 2010?

There is no denying that 2009 has challenged everyone.  Now as the clock turns to a New Year and Springtime we naturally begin to consider the future.  What do we want or need from our New Year’s Resolutions?  I just came across the following quote and it may be a good place to begin:

“To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
